What Can You Expect?
During the first appointment, lasting approximately 1 hour, the patient is evaluated in a
private evaluation room in order to determine the extent and nature of your injury.
Based on the evaluation, an individual physical therapy program is designed for you.
Programs are most often a combination of office visits and therapeutic exercises that
can be done on the patient's own time in the comfort of their home. Follow-up office
visits typically last 40 minutes to 1 hour with treatments consisting of one or more of the
following: Manual mobilization, manual and self stretching, muscle energy techniques,
hot/cold packs, ultra sound, phonophoresis, electrical stimulation, Iontophoresis,
whirlpool, paraffin bath, manual or mechanical traction, and message therapy. After the
acute stage a patient will be given a functional strengthening program that is designed
to improve the injured area which can be done at therapy and at home. The total
number of treatments depends upon the physician's prescription and the patient's
progress. Most patients are encouraged to continue their program at home which will
compliment the services you receive while receiving physical therapy.
